Brownsville Station featuring Cub Koda does the Martian Boogie and Prince Jammy has a close encounter of the dub kind - and we've only just begun! We flashback to the 70's with Mother's Finest and The Isley Brothers and go out the Back Door with Rhinoceros. Don "Sugarcane Harris and Haze precede a closing monster improv piece by the French legends Red Noise featuring Patrick Vian! Freedom rock!

Not only did Nektar have a great logo, they were a rocking band with much imagination and a legendary live show. You get a nice taste of their studio work with with Desolation Valley off of A Tab In The Ocean. Also built in to this offering, you'll find Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Teardrop Explodes, live Canned Heat from the Topanga Coral, Mahogany Rush, Otis Span and following the Nektar, we chant our way to a tree shaking close with Peter Gabriel.

It's warp(ed) speed right out of the gate with The Olivia Tremor Control, Tomorrow and William Shatner from his 1968 classic The Transformed Man! Then it's sophomore efforts from Slade, The Pretty Things and Howlin' Wolf*. Things get spacey with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and two varieties of Isis. We finally spin wonderfully out of control with Wire, The Ponys and a heavy metal blast from Todd Rundgren .

*I mentioned that Moanin' At Midnight was the second Howlin' Wolf album and I wanted to both clarify and explain the chain of events. In fact, the above mentioned 1959 release was his first official full length which was recorded for Chess Records. However, the Crown Records album Howlin' Wolf Sings The Blues contains sides cut for Modern and RPM in the early Fifties and although not released until 1962 it is considered by many to be his first due to it's content. Confusingly, the self titled album Howlin' Wolf, assumed by many to be his first was the second on Chess also released in 1962. Therefore, it would be his third for the sake of this conversation. What?

First, let's get something straight. The new Thurston Moore solo release is called Trees Outside The Academy. During today's show, I inadvertently added the number 11 to the title (beat me with oddly tuned guitars). But the title cut is number 11 and there are 11 songs in today's show! Along with this controversy you will find impressive live Tommy Bolin, ex-Doors music from The Butts Band and reggae featuring and dedicated to Prince Far I courtesy of Singers And Players. We are held Spellbound by Siouxsie And The Banshees, speed down the Autobahn with Thomas Dinger and share the covers with Bob Dylan, Patti Smith and Ronnie Wood! Who knows(?) maybe there are 11 trees outside the academy!

One the best bands to ever come out of the San Francisco Bay Area was Flamin' Groovies and that is a big statement. But just one listen to the classic Slow Death from this Dave Edmunds produced EP will surely make you a convert as well -(and don't call me Shirley)! The Death trip continues with The Dead Kennedys and the always impressive Julian Cope. We start with the funk soul thump of The (New) Rotary Connection, a former member of that legendary band Minnie Ripperton and Me'Shell NdegeOcello. The Clash, Bob Marley and Roots Radics Band bring it to JA with help from Bill Laswell and we come to a chaotic ending with The Stooges and The Soundtrack Of Our Lives working out some TV related Angst! I bought the album pictured above, Cochin Moon by Hosono and Yokoo, many years ago when I was heavy into all things Yellow Magic Orchestra. It's beautiful cover and groundbreaking electronics make it a rare collectors item in 2007. When teamed with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Japan from Tin Drum it makes a wonderful Asian diversion! We start in Boston with the mighty J. Geils Band followed by Don Covay, Humble Pie, Roxy Music, Human League, and Cockney Rebel. The show ends with a pounder from Mott The Hoople and a dangerous Une Nuit A Paris with 10cc. Magnifique!

The Residents were obviously big fans of the four moptops and not only lovingly desecrated their famous "Meet The" cover for their own debut, they also created the ultimate Beatles song Beyond The Valley Of A Day In The Life and backed by a wonderful version of Flying, released it as the ultra-rare The Residents Play The Beatles and The Beatles Play the Residents. Even the artwork of the classic vinyl single is time-capsule great! I hope John and the lads accepted this underground badge of honor with understanding and pride, themselves leaning toward the avant-garde. Preceding the above mentioned madness you will find The Beach Boys, Crosby Stills & Nash and The Beatles from a great Lennon & McCartney single.
