HAL29 - GIVE THE SINGER SOME

Today's double sized episode of RFW is all about the chords - vocal chords! We tip the hat to a collection of crooners including Tim Buckley, Daryl Hall, Robert Plant, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood, Mike Harrison, Ian Gillan, Urzula Dudziak, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Roger Daltry, Pete Townshend, Iggy Pop, Grace Slick, Rod Stewart, Steve Marriott and Jim Morrison who pleads today's sub-title to a rather vocal audience after screaming at them to SHUT-UP!

Mother, did it have to be so Pink? Despite the later years of acrimony, law suits, insults and generally unfriendly behaviour, the five Floyds are and will forever be connected to each other at the hip! Today you get the yin and yang of the band. The first half of the show is dedicated to the 1969-1970 pioneers of space and sound. The remaining time is spent revisiting the historic 2005 reunion at Live 8!

Aram Khatchaturian, Armenian composer, conductor and teacher was born in Tbilisi in 1903 and died in Moscow in 1978. Among his many compositions, one of my favorites is Sabre Dance which is featured here, performed by a young Dave Edmunds and Love Sculpture. Dave also joins with his band mates in Rockpile and gives us a Stiff single! The groovy opening is courtesy of Vampire's Sound Incorporation, Xhol (Caravan), Trans Am, The Beatles and an oddly familiar The Dukes Of Stratosphere.

I am a fan of many musicians and a devotee of a select few. But when it comes to Brian, I kneel at the alter! His music is timeless, magic and addictiv. His talent is of such magnitude that he truly deserves the term genius! Here John Cale, Sketch Show, Danny Gatton and Roy Wood all pay tribute and we hear Mr. Wilson himself with the achingly beautiful Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) from Pet Sounds! From The Wohlman Concert Archives you get live Rolling Stones from the 1972 Tour of the US and Robin Trower in Stockholm circa 1975. In the middle you'll find Chicken Bones, Ernest Ranglin, Lee "Scratch" Perry, David Bowie and Barrington Levi. Haayo!

No, we are not going to do a show about sinusitis. Today's infectious episode of RFW is a product of bad congestion, dizzying medicine and a determination to rock despite the discomfort. What you get is not the cure for the common-cold, but it did temporarily take my mind of the problem. Grab a box of tissues and get ready for Alice Cooper, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Mott The Hoople, Free, Bad Company, Curtis Mayfield, Gill Scott Heron, Tonio K, The Kinks, Lou Reed and Garland Jeffreys.

THE BOY SCOUTS

VS

THE SCHOOL OF SPONTANEOUS SELECTION

(BE PREPARED VS WING IT)

We weigh the virtues of a well researched and planned show as compared to one done flying by the proverbial seat of the pants. The results prove that both groove for the same but different reasons. Great music is great music. The Prepared hour has a strong singular message. The Spontaneous hour has a shifting thread that is influenced by itself. What?

WING IT

Our improvised set flies by with the help of Agnes Strange, Flied Egg*, Kaleidoscope, Kak, Five Horse Johnson, The Black Keys, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, George Duke, Schneider TM, Jeff Beck and Ryuichi Sakamoto!

BE PREPARED

War is the tragedy and the reality of today's conceptually constructed set. We get the needed aid from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Wilco, Gong, Rage Against The Machine, Trans Am, Tones On Tail, Edwin Star, Colosseum 2, Julian Cope, Bob Dylan, Derrick Morgan, Funkadelic and Steel Mill!

I took a fictitious couple by the name of Mary & James, for our visual aid we went with Mary Queen Of Scotts and Jim Backus (Mary Tyler-Moore and James T. JAMES

The Jimmy side of things gets a funky start from James Blood Ulmer, James Brown, James & Bobby Purify, Jim O'Rourke, James Carter, Jimmy Cliff, Jimmy Rogers, Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, Martha & The Vandelas, The Doors, The Jim Carroll Band, Pete Townshend and The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.

At the first rock show I ever attended, at Boston's Aquarius Theater in July of 1971, this 15 year old concert virgin experienced a life altering transformation. On the bill that night was a new band from England called Yes, as the opener and Humble Pie as the headliner. From my $3.50 balcony seat, I witnessed Steve Marriott, Peter Frampton, Greg Ridley and Jerry "Thunderbolt" Shirley at the height of their powers. They had played their famously recorded Fillmore East gig a few months earlier and the subsequent lp would later hit big. The rest is rock & roll history - Peter quit, Clem Clemson joined, and after years of non-stop touring and eventually decreasing album sales, the band folded. Steve Marriott continued to rock with a new version of the Small Faces, a new version(s) of Humble Pie and even a one-off session with ex-band mate Ronnie Lane. At the time of his unfortunate death in a house fire on April 20, 1991, he was in the planning stages of reuniting with Peter Frampton for a possible album and tour.

On April 20, 2001, an all-star bill of musicians joined together for the Steve Marriott Tribute Concert at the Astoria in London. Today's show will give you a historic excerpt from that show, along with a few choice Marriott tracks and an opening set from Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and The Allman Brothers. Rock On!

Lemmings are small furry rodents who inhabit the Arctic regions of North America and Europe. They neither migrate nor roam. thus, their rapid breeding soon exhausts all available food and space. Their home becomes a morass of hungry, scurrying lemmings running to and fro on top of each other with predators such as owls, foxes , wolves and bears eating huge numbers at will. Starved, unsheltered, and worked up into a state of of nervous exhaustion by overcrowding and fatigue, they die by the thousands in a suicidal ritual procession to the sea.

We pay tribute to the Lemming with a set of tunes by and about these poor misunderstood creatures. The Dutch band Lemming gives us an early B-side, Van Der Graaf Generator delivers a tune from the classic Pawn Heart and The National Lampoon Lemmings show, featuring a young John Belushi, goes to The Bottom of the Barrel. You get music from new bands like The New York Dolls, New Race and The New Violin Summit and dub messages from JA with Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby and Linton Kwesi Johnson. The show ends with a lethal dose of the blues from Joe Cocker, The Mad Dogs and The Englishmen.
